Cotham parking review moving forwards

Anthony (the other Cotham councillor) and I met with traffic engineers yesterday to look at the initial draft plans for new parking restrictions in Cotham.

This is a piece of work commissioned by the Neighbourhood Partnership and designed specifically to improve road safety - for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. It will focus mainly on protecting corners and junctions with new double yellow lines, along with a couple of changes to junctions and some specific solutions outside shopping areas. For example, it will deal with the dangerous parking on the corners coming off Hampton Road, where lines of sight for everyone are compromised.

Anthony and I made some amendments to the draft, which are now being incorporated. The public consultation will start in September (avoiding the August holiday period) and all homes in Cotham will be written to, explaining what is being proposed and asking for comments and further suggestions.

Great plans but what is going on at the moment?

There are some statutiry notices up on Archfield Rd, Cotham Park North etc about new double yellow lines.

Is this part of the same scheme?

There does not seem to be a map anywhere to get a sense of these proposals or a web address.

To make sense of the notice eg" new double yellow lines from boundary of no 32 on South East side extending 13 metres north west" needs map and compass.

Crazy - in the website age there should be a ref to a map somewhere.

Any ideas on what is going on? Shouldnt this be part of same review?

Paul - those statutory notice are a complete nightmare, aren't they!? I get a wodge of those to read each week. They are written in a very specific legalistic language which is largely baffling for the common reader.

The proposal is one that I've been working on for a couple of years now to improve road safety around Colston's Primary School.

In layman's terms, it quite simple really:

1. Double yellow lines on all four parts of the junction of Cotham Park North and Archfield Road to improve pedestrian visibility.

2. Making the SCHOOL KEEP CLEAR zig zags mandatory, so that the Police can nick people who park on them.

3. A short section of double yellows to protect the entrance to the disabled persons' housing on Cotham Park North, which often gets blocked at the moment.

4. Two disabled bays outside the elderly persons' home on Cotham Park North to enable families to pick up and drop off residents.

5. A length of double yellow lines on Redland Grove to act as an informal drop off point for the school to avoid parents using Cotham Park North.

It's currently going through final consultation for a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) which is the legal document that allows the Council to put the lines down. The more people-friendly consultation was about a year ago and local residents were sent maps. Some issues from that consultation have now been ironed out and hopefully there shouldn't be any further problems.

I do have a map of what's proposed somewhere and I'll try to dig it out and post it up here in the next day or so.
